Anti-Australian sentiment, Australophobia, or Anti-Australianism, is a hostility towards the culture, and the people of Australia. The term indicates a personal and broad-ranging animosity found within a group or individual.

Geography and history

Geography and history play an important part in anti-Australianism. In spite of its location near South East Asia, Australia is predominantly populated by people of European descent, who are decidedly members of a Western culture.

As a European-settled country in close proximity to South-East Asia, modern Australia\'s origins and culture evoke unpleasant echoes of colonialism in neighbouring countries, where the populations were dominated by Europeans, for centuries in some cases.

Singapore\'s former prime minister (now senior minister), Lee Kuan Yew, once called Australia the "poor white trash of Asia". Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad repeatedly stated that unless Australia radically altered its ethnic makeup to become "70 per cent Asian", it would never be accepted in the region.atimes.com

Chinese sports commentator Huang Jianxiang was accused for anti Australian comments during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.[1]
